Hastings Blue Reef Aquarium is asking youngsters to come up with a name for their newly-arrived baby blacktip reef shark.
The tropical shark, which is less than a year old and measures just 60 centimetres in length, is settling in well to his new home in the aquariums giant ocean display.
He has formed a close connection to a fully grown male blacktip, called Captain Jeremy Fantastic, and spends much of his time following the larger shark around.
Blue Reef’s Leanna Lawson said: “We have decided to invite younger visitors to come up with a suitable name for the new shark.
“He is very cute looking at the moment but will eventually grow to around a metre-and-a-half in length.
“We’re asking for suggestions from anyone aged under 13 years and they can either post them in to a special box we have here at reception or email them direct to us.
“Our aquarists will then sift through all the entries and pick a winner who will also receive a free annual pass to Blue Reef,” she added.
The blacktip reef shark is one of the three most common sharks inhabiting coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific along with the whitetip and grey reef sharks.
Belonging to the same family as the great white shark, blacktips only reach a maximum size of around 1.6 metres.
They are active predators and feed on a wide variety of prey including small fish, octopus, squid and crustaceans. They have also been known to eat sea snakes and even seabirds.
They give birth to live young which can hunt as soon as they are born.
