NEW SHARK JOINS AQUARIUM COLLECTION

NEW SHARK JOINS AQUARIUM COLLECTION
A baby shark has made his debut at Blue Reef Aquarium in Hastings just in time for the half term holidays.
The Port Jackson shark (Heterodontus portusjacksoni) was added to the Rock-a-Nore Road attraction’s main ocean display and keepers say he is settling in well.
Nicknamed PJ, the baby shark is currently only around 40cm long but will grow to over a metre in length.
In the wild, the species is found in the coastal region of Southern Australia, and gets its name from Port Jackson, Sydney’s natural harbour.
On arrival to the aquarium PJ was kept in a special quarantine tank before being added to the vast array of species found in the ocean display, including two Black Tip Reef Sharks.
Rachel Fiveash, Sales and Marketing Executive, said: “PJ has gorgeous markings and has taken to his new home really well.
“Guests can see him best from the underwater tunnel and if they are lucky they might see him feed– he enjoys sand eel, squid and herring amongst a mixture of other treats.”
Blue Reef Aquarium invited visitors to enjoy incredibly close encounters with seahorses, tropical sharks, giant octopus and hundreds of other incredible aquatic creatures.
Over 40 living displays recreate amazing undersea habitats from local waters to exotic seas. Informative, entertaining talks and feeding displays take place throughout the day.
